Planned Power Outages on Tongatapu for Essential Testing and Upgrades

Nuku'alofa, Tonga - July 29, 2024: Tonga Power Limited (TPL) wishes to inform the public and its valued customers on the main island of Tongatapu about a series of scheduled power outages that are necessary to conduct critical testing and essential upgrades to enhance the reliability and efficiency of our power system. These outages will affect operations across the island and are part of our ongoing commitment to providing a more resilient power infrastructure.

Power Outage Schedule:

• July 30th: 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM (Complete blackout)
• July 31st: 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM (Complete blackout)
• August 1st: 1:00 AM to 4:00 AM
• August 2nd: 1:00 AM to 4:00 AM

Important Information:

On July 30th and 31st, there will be complete blackouts from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM on the main island of Tongatapu. During this time, TPL will be conducting grid-forming tests for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and performing significant upgrades and maintenance to our power distribution network. These efforts are part of our strategic initiatives in collaboration with North Power NZ. We kindly request the public to be aware of and prepare for these complete blackouts.

On August 1st and 2nd, TPL aims to finalize the tests for the BESS. We advise the public to be prepared in case of any power outages during these tests.

Upon the completion of these tests, power will be restored to the affected areas.

TPL appreciates the understanding and support of our customers as we work towards improving the stability and performance of our power system. We understand the inconvenience these outages may cause and assure you that every effort will be made to minimize disruption.
