GCF funding secured for the USD 53.2 million Tonga Renewable Energy Project

NUKU’ALOFA, TONGA (25th October 2018) — The Government of Tonga reached a historic milestone in its efforts towards achieving 50% renewable energy generation by 2020 with the recent approval by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) of US$29.9 million in co-financing for the Tonga Renewable Energy Project (TREP) at the GCF 21st Board Meeting in Manama Bahrain, 17th October 2018.
TREP, which is being developed with the support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is a key component of the Tonga Energy Road Map (TERM) 2010–2020.

NUKU’ALOFA, TONGA (14th September 2018) — The Ground Breaking Ceremony today marks a contribution from the Government of Japan of 20 million USD for the first ever large scaled Wind farm Project in the Kingdom of Tonga. This is a milestone in the life of this project but also a tangible progress towards the Governments overall objective reducing reliance on costly imported diesel through substantial investments in renewable energy.
As stated by Honourable Minister for Public Enterprise, Saia Piukala, “We mean business when we say 50% renewable energy by 2020”. 

APPOINTMENT OF CEO

NUKU’ALOFA, TONGA (31st August  2018) — The Common Utility Board has announced the appointment of Mr. Setitaia Pasivaka Chen as the  Chief Executive Officer for Tonga Power Limited effective as of 31st August 2018.  Mr. Robert Lenes Matthews work contract as CEO expired on 31st July 2018 after completing a 3-year term.
